Ellisium is a business minded Tumblr theme by PixelMoxie. Having a clean and open layout suitable for a corporate blog, Ellisium is the perfect companion for your company’s main website. Ellisium packs a very customizable homepage slider, that gracefully adapts to smaller screens—the perfect way to present your products or introduce your services. You can display up to four services blocks on the homepage, with a choice of bitmap or webfont icons. Ellisium also comes with “call to action” and “page hero” sections to round-up your homepage, a smart sticky sidebar and much, much more.

Homepage Slider

Ellisium comes with a versatile homepage slider that lets you feature images, alongside a short title and description, plus a “click me” button, for each one of the slides. It adapts well to mobile so your content is never hard to read, and you can position your images to the right or left, or have them cover the whole slide. It’s powered by the awesome FlexSlider and it’s touch friendly.

Retina Ready

Ellisium uses webfont icons for most of its interface, and high resolution image sprites for a few elements, so your website will look awesome and crisp on any device.

Smart Sticky Sidebar

The sticky sidebar on the left side keeps you company as you scroll down the page and it degrades gracefully on small screens, turning itself into a masonry arrange of widgets below your important content and, of course, it can be disabled at any time.

“Pinned” Footer

You can optionally “pin” the footer, so it hides behind the main content and it’s revealed as you reach the bottom of the page. This behaviour is enable by default but you can choose to deactivate if you prefer a more traditional footer.

Responsive, Flexible Navigation

The navigation bar gracefully turns into a stylish multi level dropdown menu below a certain screen width, which you can even define yourself.

Services Blocks

You can display up to four services blocks, each with their own bitmap or webfont icon, title, description and clickable button. You can upload your own bitmap icons, or choose from 48 glyphs from the Linecon icon set, which is included out of the box.

Page Hero and Call-to-Action

These blocks of content are useful to greet and engage your visitors. You can display the “call-to-action” block with a clickable button, below the homepage slider. The page hero can be shown on permalinks pages or, if you choose not to use the slider, on the index page as well.

Touch Device Friendly Image Lightbox

You can optionally open your images-<del>on photo and photoset posts</del>-using the included touchTouch plugin, one of the best lightbox solutions for both desktop and mobile devices

Widgets Galore

Ellisium includes the following widgets: search, about, browse (tags), twitter, flickr, dribbble and instagram feeds, social, ask, and up to three text widgets you can use to display contact information or to enter custom code or buttons. Widgets are displayed by default on the right sidebar, but you can move them to the footer individually and even set the order in which they appear.

Sharing Made Easy

Each post can have its own interactive buttons, which include: “like”, “reblog”, and a “share” button that allows you to send the post to Twitter, Facebook, Google+, and for relevant post types, Pinterest.

Photosets As Sliders

You photosets will display as image sliders, and images can be viewed in their entire glory using the lightbox. You can choose to have the regular “rectangular dots” controls or the “image thumbnails” navigation for the post sliders.

Other Features

Ellisium also supports:

Google Web Fonts for headings other prominent blocks of text.

User created pages.

Disqus commenting system on permalink pages.

Custom user defined items on the navigation menu.

Normal and high definition image logo with type fallback if you fail to upload an image for the logo.

Compatibility with most modern browsers, including Internet Explorer 8.

It was just a few months ago when WordPress 3.5 was released (December 11, 2012 to be exact). Well, the next major release, WordPress 3.6, is already underway. WordPress 3.6 is expected to be released in late April 2013. We have been following the developments of WordPress 3.6 and decided to share with you what features to look forward to. In this article, we will discuss what features are coming in WordPress 3.6.

Better Editorial Controls

WordPress 3.6 will be a great update particularly for bloggers and content publishers. It is focused on post edit area, providing better tools and support to improve the editorial process of creating content with WordPress.

Post Lock

WordPress 3.6 will have an editorial control feature, called post lock. This will allow website administrators and authors to lock a post so that other users can not work on the same post until it is unlocked. If the other user has the rights to edit a post, then they will be prompted to either go back or take over. This is a very neat feature for blogs with multiple authors.

Improved Autosave

WordPress 3.6 will be focused on content editing, so the auto-save feature will see some great improvements. There are talks about saving unsaved changes in browser’s local storage. This will be very helpful because it will prevent you from losing posts due to expired cookies, loss of internet connection, inadvertent navigation, plugin or core errors on save, browser crashes, OS crashes, cats walking on keyboard, etc. If any of those happen, you would be able to resume editing exactly where you left it.

The goal is to get people to trust WordPress with their posts. The autosave feature was introduced for this vary reason because people were afraid of losing their work. This is the reason why many use third-party applications like Windows Live Writer to write their WordPress posts. The hope is that by enhancing the auto-save feature, many users will begin to trust the WordPress autosave capabilities.

Better Handling of Post Revisions

Post Revisions will now reflect the changes between different versions. Changes will be highlighted with colors and visual elements, so you will be able to quickly notice the difference between them.

Editorial Workflow

There were talks of integrating one of the best editorial workflow plugin into core. However due to time constraints, this feature will not be added in WordPress 3.6. The efforts weren’t wasted because it brought to surface many challenges involved in the process. This will allow the core team to prepare in advance for next release. Well nothing to worry about. You can still use Edit Flow plugin (we’re using it).

New and Improved UI for Post Formats

As you know that WordPress has support for Post Formats and custom post formats. However, the old interface was not very noticeable. In WordPress 3.6, there will be a new user interface for post formats. Users will be able to choose and switch between post formats, and the edit area will change based on the post format. Inspiration for these changes comes from Alex King’s post format UI plugin, we showed you earlier how to install Post Format UI Plugin in WordPress 3.5. Folks are submitting ideas and wireframes as to what Post Formats UI should look like. Below is a mockup submitted by Mel Choyce:

Twenty Thirteen

WordPress 3.6 will also come with Twenty Thirteen, the new default WordPress theme. Twenty Thirteen will have great support for post formats. Unlike previous WordPress default themes, Twenty Thirteen will be using lots of bold colors. It will use different background color for each post which looks great when a user scroll downs the page. Twenty Thirteen will be fully responsive and will look equally great on different screen sizes, resolutions, and devices. See the live demo.

A New GUI for WordPress Menus

The WordPress Menu editor will also get a new and more intuitive user interface. At WPBeginner, we noticed that a lot of WordPress beginners don’t understand the menu system. The tabs, menu drop down, choosing multiple menus and switching between them is trivial to most new users. Hopefully this will change in WordPress 3.6, and it will become easier to create and manage Menus in WordPress.

Improved Login Notifications

Sometimes a user session expires right in the middle of something important. The new login notification system will ask a user to login without leaving the page they were working on.

There is still some time left in the release of WordPress 3.6.
How to Add Custom Meta Boxes in WordPress Posts and Post Types

That article brought our attention to another important topic of how to add custom meta boxes in WordPress posts and post types. We wrote about a plugin method of adding meta boxes and custom write panels using More Fields plugin, but the development of that plugin has stopped. We had linked to some good tutorials that showed how to do add custom meta boxes in WordPress from our Custom Fields 101 article however all those are no longer available. Therefore in this article, we will show you how to add custom meta boxes in WordPress posts and custom post types.

Because the goal of this article is to show you how to create reusable meta boxes in WordPress, we will be utilizing a Custom Metaboxes and Fields for WordPress class (CMB) by Andrew Norcross (@norcross), Jared Atchison (@jaredatch), and Bill Erickson (@billerickson). All three of these guys are very well reputed in the WordPress community. They combined their efforts to create a powerful solution to make their job and other’s jobs a lot easier.

First thing you need to do is download the CMB class. Create a new folder and call it “custom-meta-boxes-wp”. Extract the CMB zip files in here.

Now let’s create a blank PHP file, and call it cmb-wp.php. This is the file that we will use to define our plugin and create all the meta boxes that we need. Below is an example content that you can place in this file:

<?php
/*
Plugin Name: Sitename Custom Meta Boxes
Plugin URI: http://www.mildtheme.com/
Description: Create Meta Boxes for Sitename.
Version: 1.0
Author: mildtheme
Author URI: http://www.mildtheme.com/
License: GPL v2 or higher
License URI: License URI: http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-2.0.html
*/

//Initialize the metabox class

function wpb_initialize_cmb_meta_boxes() {
	if ( ! class_exists( 'cmb_Meta_Box' ) )
 require_once(plugin_dir_path( __FILE__ ) . 'init.php');
}

add_action( 'init', 'wpb_initialize_cmb_meta_boxes', 9999 );

//Add Meta Boxes

function wpb_sample_metaboxes( $meta_boxes ) {
	$prefix = '_wpb_'; // Prefix for all fields

	$meta_boxes[] = array(
 'id' => 'test_metabox',
 'title' => 'Test Metabox',
 'pages' => array('page'), // post type
 'context' => 'normal',
 'priority' => 'high',
 'show_names' => true, // Show field names on the left
 'fields' => array(
 array(
 'name' => 'Test Text',
 'desc' => 'field description (optional)',
 'id' => $prefix . 'test_text',
 'type' => 'text'
 ),
 ),
	);

	return $meta_boxes;
}
add_filter( 'cmb_meta_boxes', 'wpb_sample_metaboxes' );

The above example is very basic. It just adds a sample test meta box with a text field on “pages”. As you can see, that you have the option to customize the post type, and just about everything. CMB class supports the following field types:

text

text small

text medium

text money

date picker

date picker (unix timestamp)

date time picker combo (unix timestamp)

time picker

color picker

textarea

textarea small

textarea code

select

radio

radio inline

taxonomy radio

taxonomy select

checkbox

multicheck

WYSIWYG/TinyMCE

Image/file upload

Here is the wiki page that will show you how to add all the field types. There is also an example-functions.php file that you can use to reference.

Once you are done, upload the folder in your plugins folder. Now, you can easily display these fields in your loop by using get_post_meta() function. Here is a tutorial if you want to display custom fields outside the loop.

Ever since we found this CMB class, we have not looked back. We use this on all of our projects and client projects as well. If you are a designer/developer, then you will find this to be really easy and help you improve your workflow. We hope that this tutorial has helped you add custom meta boxes in WordPress posts and post types.

How to Add Rich Contact Information in WordPress

Step by step guide on how to add rich contact information in WordPress for better SEO results. Increase your CTR in local search for small businesses.

Web search engines like Google or Bing are trying to pull more and more semantic from the content of the websites they index every day. Specific markups like microdata and microformats have been created to help search engines understand the meaning of your content. Search engines utilize this data to provide additional information on the search results page. Having rich snippets in search has shown to improve click through rate. In this article, we will show you how to easily add rich contact information in your WordPress site, so they can be displayed as rich snippets in the search results.

What are rich snippets for contact?

You may have already seen these rich snippets without even knowing. It adds relevant contact data like address, city, phone number, etc below the description when a website appears in search results page. Here is an example:

Why should I care?

That’s a good question. Rich snippets can be a great help to show that your content is relevant to the user’s search query. It can increase the CTR (Click Through Rate) of your page in the search results. This is also a great way to stand out against your competitors on your selected keywords. Often local small businesses are behind the curve, so if you are one of the savvy small business owners, then make sure to implement this technique on your site.

How to add rich contact information in WordPress

We will take a look at two methods to insert rich contact information on your WordPress site. One will require a plugin, and the other would be the hard coded method.

Method 1 : with the Rich Contact Widget plugin

The easiest way is by using the Rich Contact Widget plugin. After installing and activating the plugin, go to Appearance » Widgets submenu. You will be able to add the Rich Contact widget in one of the widget areas of your theme. Fill out all your contact information, and let this plugin take care of the required markup for rich snippets.

Additionally, you can display an image map of your location, and provide a download link for a vCard containing your contact data. These are just options for your website visitors, and can be deactivated in the widget configuration.

Method 2: Hard coded in your theme

This method requires to edit your WordPress theme files, where you want the contact information to display. The example below will show you how to add both microdata and microformats, but you can use only one of them (microdata is the recommended one by Google).

<ul class="vcard" itemscope itemtype="http://schema.org/Corporation">
<li class="fn org" itemprop="name"><strong>Your company name</strong></li>
<li itemprop="description">Your activity</li>
<ul class="adr" itemprop="address" itemscope itemtype="http://schema.org/PostalAddress">
<li class="street-address" itemprop="streetAddress">Your address</li>
<li><span class="locality" itemprop="addressLocality">City</span> <span class="region" itemprop="addressRegion">State</span> <span class="postal-code" itemprop="postalCode">Zip Code</span></li>
<li class="country-name" itemprop="addressCountry">Country</li>
</ul>
<li class="tel" itemprop="telephone">Your phone number</li>
<li class="email" itemprop="email"><a href="<?php antispambot( 'youremail@example.com' ) ?>">youremail@example.com</a></li>
</ul>

Microformats uses the class attributes to markup the data, while microdata uses itemtype and itemprop attributes. Detailed information for microdata markup can be found on the schema.org website, same for microformats with the hCard markup.

You can also see there is a function called antispambot() used in this code. It’s a WordPress specific function to protect your email address from spam bots crawling the web. A non-well know function but it is very useful.

Testing for structured data on your website

After utilizing one of the methods above, search engines will be able to get rich snippets data from your website. You can test it on this page by Google. Enter the url you want to preview, and all the structured data extracted will be displayed.

And you are done, search engines will now be able to pull rich information data from your website, and after a while it should display on the search results pages. Feel free to comment for any suggestions or questions.

How to Change the Default Media Upload Location in WordPress 3.5

The new Media Uploader in WordPress 3.5 is probably the most important change of this release. Another important but less talked about change is the disappearance of the option to change the upload directory path from Settings. The reason for removing this option from the UI was that it is not as commonly used as other options. It also has the potential of creating chaos if the user accidentally changes it. Removing it will simplify the UI with just a check box for year/month folder organization. In this post we will show you how to change the default media upload location in WordPress 3.5.

Note: This tutorial is not for beginners. Use it only if you know what you are doing.

In order to change the default media upload location, you need to edit the
wp-config.php
file located in the root directory of your WordPress installation. If you want upload directory to be
wp-content/files
then you will need to place the following code in
wp-config.php

define( 'UPLOADS', 'wp-content/'.'files' );

If you want the upload directory to be outside wp-content, like http://www.example.com/files/ then you need to set upload path in wp-config.php like this:

define( 'UPLOADS', ''.'files' );

Remember you can still choose whether or not you want uploaded files to be organized in month/year folders in Settings » Media.

Everyone who has a successful blog or online presence can agree that search engine marketing is important. After the Google Panda and Penguin updates, everyone is trying to find ways to increase their organic search traffic the right way. A while ago, we came across a tool called HitTail through a friend’s recommendation. Although we were impressed with his HitTail review, like most folks we are skeptics when it comes to anything SEO related. After using HitTail to facilitate our long-tail SEO startegy on WPBeginner, we found that we increased our organic search traffic by 20% in less than 2 months.

Some of you would be like 20% that’s it? There are other bloggers who are bragging about 500% increases. The issue is that those other bloggers don’t have a lot of traffic to begin with. Increasing 500% is easy when you only have 500 visitors a month from Google. It is nearly impossible to do that on an established site getting 250,000+ visitors a month from Google. In this article, we will show you how we increased our organic search traffic using HitTail in WordPress by taking advantage of the long tail keywords.

What is Long Tail SEO?

Before we cover the topic on how we increased our organic search traffic, it is crucial that everyone understand what is long tail SEO. More importantly, we want everyone to understand the value of long tail SEO along with knowing the reasons why most smart SEO folks use long tail SEO.

Long Tail SEO refers to targeting niche specific search keywords which are usually 2 words or more in length. An example of this would be: “custom fields in WordPress”. Most folks who don’t know better would try to rank for keywords like “WordPress” or “WordPress tutorials”. While there is value in those major keywords, there is a ton of competition. There is no easy white-hat way for you to see immediate impact on your search engine rankings for those major keywords. However, chances are folks that search those major keywords are less likely to convert vs. someone who came to your site looking for something very specific.

If you ever look at your site’s analytics, then you will get the perception that major keywords usually get the highest traffic. Most folks don’t bother going after the first few pages of their keyword results because they start seeing a bunch of keywords bringing in 5-10 visits a month. Anyone who don’t know better would say its best to focus on keywords that are bringing you the most traffic. However, anyone who can do a little bit of arithmetic can add up the number of visits on the long-tail keywords to show you where you should really be focusing on.

By looking at the chart above, the value of long tail SEO should be evident. There is clearly more search value in long tail keywords as a whole than the popular keywords (70% of all search queries comprise of long tail terms). The biggest benefit of going after long tail keywords is that you can start seeing immediate traffic increase because long tail keywords are usually less competitive. This was the main reason why long tail SEO has always been part of our strategy.

So where does HitTail come in play in all this? Well for the longest time, we utilized Google Analytics to gather as much long tail keyword data that we could. Overtime as our site grew, analyzing keywords through Google Analytics became harder and harder. Downloading the long list of tables was also not an option because like most people we are not data junkies. This is when we started looking for a new method to find the long tail data and capitalize on it.

What is HitTail?

HitTail is a tracking software that track your website search data for under-performing long tail keywords. Once you put their tracking code on your site, it quietly runs in the background to record search hits and keyword information. HitTail then analyzes all those keywords using their algorithm to provide you with a list of suggested long tail keywords that you should be able to rank well for. Using the keyword suggestions, you should be able to increase your search traffic fairly easily.

How to Setup HitTail in WordPress

Before we go ahead and show the screenshots of how things work, it is best to cover how to setup HitTail in WordPress. First thing you need to do is signup with HitTail. It is a paid service which starts at $9.95 per month. There plans are based on the amount of traffic you get, so for larger sites you have to pay accordingly. They do have a free trial period of 21 days that you can use the product and test to see if you like it or not. The data is real-time, so you should be able to get a good idea of whether HitTail is for you or not within the trial period.

After the signup, you will be given a tracking code to paste on your site. There are two ways you can integrate HitTail in your WordPress site.

Method 1: Copy the tracking code and paste it in your footer.php file. You can also use our Insert Headers and Footers plugin to add that code in your WordPress site.

Method 2: You can use the official HitTail plugin for WordPress. Simply install and activate the plugin. Login to your HitTail account and go to Account » Sites.

Copy the site ID and paste it in the plugins setting page.

Once you do that, you are done with the setup. Give it some time, and you will start seeing keyword suggestions. We have it set to send us keyword suggestions daily via email. You can have it set to weekly if you like.

How to Use HitTail to Get Maximum Benefits

Once you have setup HitTail, login to your HitTail dashboard and go to the Suggestions tab. You will see a list of keywords along with the search engines where the traffic is coming from.

Go through the list of keywords and see if your content is related. You can easily tweak/optimize your article or landing page to improve your ranking position for a specific keyword. Sometimes even though you rank for a specific term, the article you have ranking is not the most accurate one. You can use that data to create a new post on your site, so you can provide relevant material to your audience. This will often allow you to move from position 8 to position 1 in a matter of days.

Here at WPBeginner, we use HitTail keyword suggestions to both improve our existing articles and get new post ideas as well. HitTail has an option for you to mark the keyword in the To-Do list. Once completed, you can mark it as done.

They also have the option where you can pay them $19 to write a 400 word article related to the keyword. We haven’t tried this part of their service. Quite honestly, we believe that anything which is limited by the word count is not quality material. But that is only our opinion. You are more than welcome to try out their article writing service if you so desire.

Another thing we have started doing with these long tail keyword suggestions is that we use them as anchors on our internal links. If you don’t know already, internal linking is great for increasing pageviews in WordPress. It also helps you fight content scrapers. Using those long tail keyword suggestions as part of your internal linking strategy can be very helpful.

You could easily use the long tail keyword suggestions in running your PPC (pay per click) campaigns however we haven’t done that. Mainly because we don’t do PPC advertisement.

Our Thoughts on HitTail

If you can’t tell already, we love HitTail. The functionality it offers is amazing, and it is really helping us grow our blog. You can never run out of post ideas if you are using HitTail. There are a few usability things that we hope they improve on in the future.

One of the most annoying part of using HitTail is the keyword pagination. Currently, you can only see 15 keywords on each page. This means that you have to do a lot of clicking. To add to that, they only have the previous/next arrows. We really wish that they had an option to easily sort the number of keywords we want to display on page. For example, we would totally display 100 keywords on each page. Granted that there is an export to excel option available, it is not feasible if you want to use their To Do list.

The other thing that they can improve on is a clear way to add keywords in your to-do list. Currently you can only add keywords from the suggestions tab in your to-do list. If you go to the full keywords list, then you have to move the keywords into suggestions first before you can move it in the to-do list.

Considering that we have a design background, those minor UI issues really seemed to bother us. However, the overall functionality of the tool outweighs the minor UI issues that we don’t like. We love using HitTail to get new post ideas (over 30 new posts are ready to be published). HitTail is a great tool for bloggers, internet marketers, SEOs, and anyone who want to grow their organic search traffic.

Final Thoughts

If you want to increase your organic search traffic, then you have to start working on your long-tail keyword strategy. Your audience is getting smarter every day, and they know how to search. Most users search for relevant things, and they want relevant results. When someone wants to buy a pair of nike shoes, they are not going to search for shoes. They are going to search for a specific type of shoes such as “nike running shoes” or more specifically “nike free run+ reviews”. This is the type of user that is more likely to buy the product. If you want to grow your organic search traffic using long tail, then we highly recommend that you start using HitTail.
